Ranging from the Early Middle Ages to the present day the Biographische Enzyklopädie deutschsprachiger Philosophen (Biographical Encyclopedia of German-language Philosophers) encompasses the full spectrum of philosophical thinking within the German-language area. The encyclopedia is based on the Deutsche Biographische Enzyklopädie (German Biographical Encyclopedia). All entries have been revised, extended and rounded off with extensive references to works by the philosophers themselves as well as to further literature. Some 170 biographies are listed for the first time, raising their total number to approximately 1,400. Articles on philosophers of historical importance have been written by a...cknowledged experts and are individually signed. Apart from Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and other great names, there are many obscure figures to be discovered: master thinkers next to scientists and representatives of schools of philosophy. Thinkers from related disciplines have also been considered: The term philosopher is thus applied to theologians who are influential as philosophers of religion, jurists who are philosophers of law, as well as to scientists who have written significant works on natural philosophy.
