An astonishing number of museums have changed their names in recent years. As an aid to locating museums and avoiding confusion, the previous names are provided after the current ones. The paintings can be found in any one of three ways. In Artists and Their Works (volumes 1-3) the artists are arranged alphabetically together with their biographical details, whilst the pictures are listed according to their location. The entries include the title of the painting, its year of origin, material, format and special references such as "copy", "studio piece", "attributed to" etc. Where several names are in use, especially for painters of earlier epochs, references have been made to the more common forms. The same applies to pseudonyms and double names of painters. The Iconographic Directory in the volumes 4 and 5 divides the work into 300 groups of motives and is especially useful for research. Searches are further assisted by a classified index of over 900 terms, including subjects as obscure as "Alchemist Workshops" or "Atomic Physicians".
