Dr. Iannis and his daughter, Pelagia, live on the idyllic Greek island of Cephallonia in the years before World War II. Pelagia falls in love with Mandras, a fisherman, but when Italy attacks Greece in 1940, Mandras goes to war, and the villagers' quiet lives are changed forever. When an Italian officer, Corelli, is billeted with Dr. Iannis, he and his mandolin-playing fascinate the entire community--including Pelagia, who falls deeply under his spell. Pelagia's courage and optimism are severely tested by the German invasion and the Greek civil war that follows the defeat of the Axis.
