Portugal has a wonderfully long history and great variations in landscape and character. And this book has a terrific selection of special places. There are modern homes, full of light and space and old houses, which are among the finest in the world. There has probably never been a better time to stay in Portugal; the advent of 'turismo de habitaçao' and 'turismo rural' has encouraged owners of historic and rural homes to open their doors to guests and to stay in those homes is a real insight. It is surprising how often, for example, we have discovered houses where the same family has lived for several centuries; it's a treat to enjoy a small slice of that tradition.
