I received my BA in Chemistry from Williams College in 1975 and my PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Miami in 1980 and joined King's College London when it merged with UMDS in 1999. My research has consistently focused on the regulation of smooth muscle contraction, especially in the vascular system. Most recently I have been interested in the regulation of arteries by hypoxia, reactive oxygen species, and hydrogen sulfide, and also in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension.

I am the lead author of the textbook The Cardiovascular System at a Glance, and I have recently stepped down as a Trustee of the Physiology Society. I teach on many aspects of the cardiovascular system to medical, dental and basic science students, and currently, organize the Foundations of Biomedical Sciences 2 module which is part of the Stage 1 MBBS programme.
