Thanks to the dedicated, if not passionate, collecting of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lueneburg, the Library Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbuettel boasts a total of some 350,000 volumes published up to 1830. The portrait collection contains every kind of graphic portrait, ranging from 16th century woodcarvings to 19th wood engravings. Encompassing some 25,000 sheets, this collection has been undergoing restoration and cataloguing since 1968. Initially, Series A of the catalogue consisted of 28 picture books. The nine text volumes provide biographical and bibliographical details on the portrayed persons, descriptions of the portraits as well as information on the artist and the respective technique. The six supplement volumes complements another 3,000 portraits, acquired after the beginning of this publication, and about 600 further portraits in other techniques and from various other sources. The edition is made accessible by seven index volumes, with 15 individual indexes.
