Ruth Rendell (ps. Barbara Vine) ur. 17 lutego 1930 - brytyjska powieściopisarka, autorka powieści detektywistycznych i psychologicznych. Swą karierę rozpoczynała jako dziennikarka dla lokalnych gazet w hrabstwie Essex. Pracę straciła po opublikowaniu reportażu z tradycyjnego rocznego spotkania klubu tenisowego, na którym nie była obecna, i pominęła śmierć przemawiającego podczas swej mowy. Pierwszą powieść opublikowała w roku 1965. W swych powieściach zwykle skupia się na portrecie psychologicznym zabójcy, eksponuje obsesje seksualne, krzywdy doznane w dzieciństwie (A look for sore eyes), wpływ przypadku na czyn przestępczy. Jest bystrą obserwatorką i analizatorką świata zewnętrznego. Stworzyła postać inspektora Wexforda, którego postać była głównyym bohaterem popularnego serialu detektywistycznego. Jej powieść Live flesh sfilmował Pedro Almodóvar (Drżące ciało). Zdobywczyni wielu wyróżnień i nagród w świecie powieści detektywistycznych, w tym m.in. czterokrotnie Diamentowego sztyletu - nagrody brytyjskiego stowarzyszenia autorów powieści kryminalnych.
