1990s brought about a very fast growth of SME sector in Polish economy. However, its dynamics had a decreasing tendency, especially on the verge of XXI century. The explanation of the phenomenon-s reasons may constitute a factor for the justification of current national policy towards SME, and to create guidelines for future policies within the area. Having observed the fact of inhibiting the level of SME-s growth in Poland, one may conclude that traditional sources of this sector-s expansion had been exploited. To reach for new, adequate scale calls for the help of the state. Presented study shows how the actions of the state, in terms of the creation of law and the promotion of knowledge, include SME-s development on macroeconomic and microeconomic scale. The analysis leads to a thesis that the support of the state is inadequate to achieve new impulses of SME-s develop-ment in Poland. Its present expansion is mainly the result of diligence of enterprising citizens. This report presents findings of four company case studies from ICT, tourism, production and service sectors. It is based on research reports written on the basis of interviews conducted with firms representa-tives in the second quarter of 2004. The results of the study cannot be called representative in any manner, but they do show some common problems of SME, both on sector and regional levels. Thus, the findings can be used to illustrate and better understand the situation of SME sector in Poland.
