This expanded edition reflects the advances in pathology, radiology and genetics since the publication of the first edition in 1989. This work is divided into six sections. Section 1 reviews the mechanisms and pathogenesis of antenatal diseases and disorders. Section 2 deals with prenatal pathology and conditions peculiar to early life, including stillbirths, recurrent abortions, iatrogenic and forensic situations. Section 3 discusses systemic and special pathology. Section 4 covers imaging of the embryo, foetus and newborn, including biometry, biophysical profiles, ultrasound and echocardiography. It pays particular attention to identifying the foetus at risk, and to the value and accuracy of antenatal ultrasound screening.
Section 5 describes a series of prenatal genetic screening and diagnostic modalities and tests, some of which are still experimental. It emphasizes recombinant DNA techniques along with the more familiar biochemical and cytogenetic methods. The text also discusses carrier detection and parental counselling. The sixth and largest section deals with managing the at risk foetus and newborn. The appropriate experts review the acute and specific conditions, offering current management options, especially for the very low birthweight infant.
