“Interesującą kwestią zdaje się być fakt, iż w języku włoskim zachowane zostały pewne utarte zwroty językowe związane z wyrazami suocera i nuora występującymi osobno lub w parze, natomiast w języku polskim nie znajdujemy ich odpowiedników. Można rzec, że pod względem frazeologicznym język polski zaniedbał tą wyjątkową parę. Oczywiście, w obu językach istnieje niezliczona ilość dowcipów dotyczących głównie postaci teściowej, jednak widać wyraźnie, że w języku włoskim suocera i nuora mają swoje dobrze określone miejsce. I tak: Andare d’accordo come suocera e nuora – dosłownie: “zgadzać sie jak teściowa i synowa” – znaczenie: być ze sobą w ciągłym konflikcie. W przypadku tego określenia możnaby było zastosować ekwiwalent „żyć z sobą jak pies z kotem” ale takie samo określenie istnieje w języku włoskim: „vivere come cani e gatti” dlatego też lepiej jest tutaj zastosowac dosłowne tłumaczenie wyrażenia włoskiego. Dire a nuora perché suocera intenda – czyli „powiedzieć synowej aby teściowa zrozumiała” – znaczenie: zwracanie się do jednej osoby ale z zamiarem aby jej intencje pojęła druga osoba, czyli ta do której nie zwrócono się bezpośrednio. Essere/stare come suocera e nuora – “żyć jak teściowa z synową” – znaczenie: żyć w ciągłej kłótni i nienawiści. W języku polskim używa się wyrażenia „żyć jak pies z kotem”. Fare la suocera/essere una suocera – „zachowywać się jak teściowa” - Non far tanto la suocera! – “Nie udawaj teściowej, Nie zachowuj się jak teściowa” – znaczenie: to włoskie wyrażenie sugeruje, szczególnie w podanym jako przykład zdaniu wykrzyknikowym, aby adresatka nie zachowywała się w sposób apodyktyczny i autorytarny. (la) lingua di suocera – „język teściowej” – znaczenie: w języku włoskim to płaski, długi herbatnik, czasem pokryty czekoladą. W obu językach natomiast wyrażenie to odnosi się do rośliny o długich, wiecznie zielonych liściach z gatunku sanseweria gwinejska, zwana wężownicą lub właśnie „językiem teściowej”. Roślina ta jest trująca. Lo sciroppo di suocera e nuora – „syrop/mikstura teściowej i synowej”; użycie takiego wyrażenia oznacza w języku włoskim ukazanie koncentracji nienawiści zawartej w trakcie jakiegoś konfliktu czy zaognionej sytuacji.”

But romantic music has existed in every age, and even Plato warned against it because he believed that melancholy could actually weaken the state, and it's patently clear when you get to Puccini and Mahler that music has become a direct expression of what I'm trying to get you to comprehend, that life is too short and that the way human beings are fashioned means they must take leave of far too much. If you've heard Mahler's Abschied from Das Lied von the Erde you'll know what I mean. Hopefully you'll have understood that it's the farewell itself I'm referring to, the actual leave- taking, and that this takes place in the self-same organ where everything I'm saying goodbye to is stored.”
